Today ... the beginning of a long weekend.

~ Chief Henri Membertou ~

 of the Mi'kmaq Indians

I wonder if Chief Membertou had children?

There’s that old saying, “... when everything old is new again” and a while ago they reintroduced the “PAPOOSE”, a baby carrier in all different sling versions. For a while in the middle 1900’s it was not socially acceptable to breast feed or hold your baby for too long let alone carry it around in a papoose, but today it’s the latest fad. No. It’s a remake.

I know parents who believe when it’s time to nap, it’s time to nap. They put the baby in the crib and let it cry until it falls asleep. I swear those babies cry so hard sometimes that it must cause brain damage. On the other hand, I’ve been told by my older family members that when they were young (early 1920’s), in their country (I don’t know about mine), their parents gave them opium to put them to sleep at night. They swear on the Holy Bible that it’s the truth. Their parents bought it on the black market and it was unheard of that babies didn’t sleep at night, after all their parents were up at the crack of dawn to milk the cows and feed the animals. The two extremes. Either way it must cause brain damage.

Just out of High School, I worked with an older woman who had a child in Canada shortly after WWII. According to her, there were no cribs available for anyone and they didn’t have the money anyway so they pulled out a dresser drawer, lined it with blankets and put the newborn to sleep in it until it grew out of it or until someone gave them a crib. We live in a spoiled rotten society.

And baby food? Who could afford it? They made their own. They didn’t feed them puree for long. What about pablum? That’s a different story.

What a mess!
